Excellent piece. I'm thinking the cat is long out of the bag on "users ignore display advertising online and have developed a sort of “blindness” to these types of ads. Imagine how tough an online sales rep’s job will get once that becomes common knowledge." Anyone who uses the web already knows that they are blind to web display ads.

To put it bluntly, nobody cares about newspapers.

The thing people care about is "How do we make sure there's enough money to fund quality journalism that I care about?", not "How do we save newspapers so selfish bean-counters we don't like or trust can continue to make obscene double-digit profits whilst preaching about civic virtures?"

The lesson from last week's PopTech08 conference? Don't try to monetize your network too soon. The lesson from this post? Forget innovation and change: MAKE MONEY NOW!

Sound practical: Just like every other practical-sounding mistake the newspaper industry has made as it circles the drain. Hey, while you're at it, figure out how to transmute lead into gold.

Yeah, you need other revenue streams. There are plenty of them -- but few have much to do with print products. And VERY few of them scale to the overhead required to keep a mid-sized metro in the black.

What survives? A few nationals and lots of focused local weeklies. Web sites. Smart niche products. What dies? Mid-sized metros. Monopolies. Top-down management. Ten-percent profit margins.

Have fun at the apocalypse.

Alternately, a few key news organizations could abandon advertising entirely, and turn themselves into public trusts. They would need to raise billion dollar endowments to do this, but it's not as though they lack the resources to publicize what they're up to.

Do we need several dozen regional papers all repackaging the same feeds from the AP? Not with the internet we don't. But do we need a 4th Estate that is independent from government and commercial patronage? Absolutely.

This suggestion will not 'save' the newspaper business. But it can help society preserve for itself what is most valuable in the newspaper business.

Decent analysis, but I feel you totally missed the mark on the lack of marketing. Newspapers suffer from bad pr and broken trust. If they fixed that, and this could be done through entirely free means, I submit to you that the advertising dollars would come back. Time and again, print has been proven as the most effective means of advertising, it's the content and presentation that's lacking, not the advertising.
