‘Tis the season to redesign

I’ve redesigned my personal Web site, kiyoshimartinez.com and also updated my links page.

I thought about doing a very elaborate redesign for my site, but realized the more complex ideas I had, the more cluttered and unclean it would look. So, I went for a very simple layout that kept plenty of white space, iconic visuals and easy-to-read typography.

Also, I tried to make my page more Google friendly for indexing and increase my personal page rank for my own name. Granted, if you type my name into Google, I’m still number one, but I figure a few changes can’t hurt to keep it that way.

I’m hoping that both my WordPress and Tumblr blogs will be ranked higher, along with my Facebook and LinkedIn profiles.

Last year, it became obvious to me that I wanted to control the search results better for my name when it’s typed into Google. While you can’t issue takedown notices, or demand what people link to you, you do have some measure of control. So, I figure it’s time to game Google a bit and see what can be done. So far, I think I’ve done all right.

UPDATE: I’ve also added my resume online. Much better than the outdated one I had floating around before. For good measure, I’ve also added hyperlinks where I could. I wish the Rockford Register Star would stop hiding their archives behind a damned paywall. When will they realize that paywalls are dead?

How much money did you make with your precious archives, and how much traffic did you lose? Newspapers need to open their archives, cross link their articles and get Google to index as much of their stuff as possible. Put ads on your old content, for heaven’s sake.

Amen. Don’t make me pay for a newspaper, ever. I cheered on Rupert Murdoch’s takeover of Dow Jones and the Wall Street Journal for one reason: Free access to wsj.com.
