Of mice and men

I am now the proud owner of a pet mouse. I’d prefer not to be, but you could say this particular rodent dropped in on me.

A few nights ago I was sitting at my computer desk, watching TV and saw something shoot across the floor along the wall. Then, a few minutes later, it shot back the other way. Momentarily freaked out, I put on shoes thinking that I might have to squish a 1000-legger centipede.

As it turned out, I only had to worry about a furball with four legs. I found the mouse hiding behind my desk and desktop tower along the computer cords. I attempted to trap the mouse, but it scampered away and underneath a doorway leading into the unfinished part of the basement that I live in.

I knew that it wouldn’t be long until we would again do battle. Sure enough on Sunday night I received my second sighting.

The ceiling of the basement is a dropped ceiling with tiles. I’d removed one previously to have access to some cables running above and left it open.

So, tonight I heard a “thunk” sound and as I look over to the general area, I see a mouse on top of a metal folding chair. Quickly, I uncapped the top to my CD-ROM spindle and trapped the mouse.

Eventually, I attached the bottom of the spindle to the top and now I have the furball securely locked away.

I don’t plan on killing the mouse, as it’s actually kind of cute and adorable. The plan is to release it into the wild several miles away from where I live and hopefully this will be my only encounter with rodents at my new dwelling.

UPDATE: I’ve since released Wilbur (yes, I named him during his brief stint in captivity) and he’s out in the wild suburban prairie of Orland Park enjoying his newfound freedom.

You should have asked the mouse if he knew how to cook.
