When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro
Obviously, I haven’t been blogging here in quite some time, but for those who might stumble upon this and not know what I’m up to these days (i.e. those who I don’t talk to via AIM, GoogleTalk or Facebook) here’s a brief update.
I’m entering into the third week of my new job as a Web site assistant for 22nd Century Media LLC, which is a group of five community weekly newspapers in the south suburbs of Chicago.
On a daily basis, I’m helping to update the editorial content for several of the Web sites: The Homer Horizon, Mokena Messenger, Frankfort Station, Orland Park Prairie and New Lenox Patriot.
Outside of that, I also have had the chance to learn how to edit video and work on other projects to help develop the Web sites. In short, I’m doing things I’ve never done before in journalism and I’ve been given a chance to have an enormous amount of flexibility to pursue ideas that I didn’t believe I’d be able to do straight out of college.
The only real gripe I have now isn’t related to the job itself, but rather the commute to get to Orland Park from Aurora. Construction delays, lots of stoplights and one lane in each direction during rush-hour traffic isn’t ideal (although I’ve been getting intimately familiar with talk radio again). Fortunately, I’ll be moving this weekend to Orland Park, putting myself about a five-minute drive away.
You can be sure that as time goes on and new features get added to the papers’ Web sites, I’ll post something here to bring them to your attention.
